With the f irs t p re s id e n t ia l p r im aries only th ree m on ths aw ay, c a m p u s g ro u p s h av e begun to address rates of stu dent voter registration. Newly fo rm e d c a m p u s i n i t i a t iv e N D V otes’08, a n o n p a r t i s a n ed u ca t io n a l cam p a ig n s p o n sored by the Center for Social Concerns, is spearheading the efforts. Senior Mike McKenna, CSC co o rd in a to r and NDVotes'08 member, described the coali tion as “a localized extension” o f th e Rock th e Vote Campaign, a national nonprof it o rg a n iz a t io n deve loped to in c re a s e p o li t ica l advocacy, especia lly am ong young vo t ers. The coalition “developed as a ta sk force th is fall to give [ the v o t in g in i t ia t iv e ] m o re ow nersh ip cam pus-w ide ,” he said. NDVotes’08 consists of vari ous political g roups on c a m p u s , i n c lu d in g College D e m o c r a t s , College Republicans, ND Right to Life, NAACP a n d o t h e r g r o u p s , McKenna said. W h ile N D V otes’08 is n o t a f f i l i a te d w ith th e n a t io n a l Rock the Vote organization, it shares similar objectives. “Our goals a re s tream lined with Rock the Vote,” McKenna sa id . “We s t r e s s e d u c a t io n , registration and awareness .” Political g roups on cam pus have recently jum ped onboard w ith N D V otes’08 , b u t t h e i r roles and duties have not yet been specified, said Spencer H o w a rd , c o p r e s i d e n t of College Democrats. T h e p r e s i d e n t o f C o llege Republicans, Sarah Way, sees the affiliation for NDVotes’08 as an extended effort to regis ter as many students as possi ble. “This is really a b ipa r t isan e f fo r t to g e t p e o p le to c a re e n o u g h to v o t e , ” sh e sa id . “Every vote does count.
